Things I will miss…
This photo combines three things Thai students love: Scrabble (or as they say “Teachah Crossword!!”), competition and malls.
Which is more unbelievable?
a) These are boys
b) These are my students
c) These are contestants in a school sponsored “ladyboy” competition honoring the Princess of Thailand
d) All of the above.
These three students, Mai, Ying and Cake are the leaders of the English Project “Making Merit: From Garbage to Treasure.” For the past 8 months, they have collected bottles, cans and used paper from all around Anukoolnaree School and recycled it in exchange for money. They have collected over 23,000 baht ($750) worth of recycling. They will use this money to make an offering at a rural Buddhist temple in Kalasin that would not otherwise have one.
After the girls won the provincial competition two months ago, I became involved with this project as a writer, pronunciation counselor, public speaking coach and all around cheerleader.
Tomorrow they will head to the regional competition where they will give a 10 minute memorized, speech in English. They are especially excited for the trip to the big city and the fact that they get to wear all white “student suits.”
